At some time before the restoration of the church in 1878 there was a gallery at the west end of the nave.
This picture was taken from a painting in the Dryden Collection at the Central Library, in Abington Street, Northampton.
The painting is by Alice Dryden, and is the only picture known of the gallery, there is no mention of it in the Vicar’s notes on the restoration and it is assumed that it had been removed some time before the restoration took place.
It is probable that the gallery was removed because the walls were being moved outwards by the weight of the roof and no doubt it was thought to be getting near collapse.
There are photographs of the church in the Central Library which show the marks on the tower, where the roof has dropped a few inches.
